Benefits

The Mono Tiltrotor design delivers operational, economic, and investment protection benefits.  A summary of quantifiable benefits includes the following:

  1. The design offers a breakthrough combination of range, speed, and payload in a VTOL aircraft, and achieves this breakthrough using off-the-shelf components and technologies.
  2. Development, acquisition, operations, and support costs are all reduced compared to legacy rotorcraft concepts with the following justifications:
    • A major factor in aircraft development cost is the advancement of component technologies and the development of a suitable engine.  The Mono Tiltrotor design uses off-the-shelf component technologies and off-the-shelf engines which in combination reduce the research and development costs.
    • Acquisition costs are historically proportional to the structural weight of the aircraft, and the Mono Tiltrotor design is 1/3rd the weight of legacy helicopter concepts which significantly reduces acquisition costs.
    • Operations costs are dominated by fuel and personnel costs, and the Mono Tiltrotor design uses 1/3rd the fuel compared to legacy helicopter concepts and requires no personnel and no material handling equipment at the cargo drop-off site which in combination reduce operations costs.
    • A major factor in support costs is time to remove and replace failed components.  The Mono Tiltrotor's modular design with highly accessible components is expected to have a positive effect on repair times and support costs.
  3. The ability to reconfigure the aircraft using special mission packages protects the initial material investment by enabling enhanced operational capabilities without any change to the base platform.  For instance, a Cargo UAS can be re-missioned for attack operations by disconnecting the cargo pod and mounting armament sponsons.  A CASEVAC package can be carried in the cargo pod, or have its own aerodynamic profile and be suspended from the aircraft.  Surveillance mission packages can be developed to be transported on sponsons, inside the cargo pod, or as a suspended load.
In summary, the Mono Tiltrotor design's breakthrough performance provides sufficient justification to be acquired and fielded, and its modular design is ideally suited for a broad range of future mission packages while protecting the investment in the initial platform.
